The name Centenary Heights was approved in 1960 to commemorate the separation of Queensland from New South Wales. St Thomas More's Catholic Primary School (Catholic primary school on South Street) was opened first in 1961, followed by Centenary Heights State High School (secondary school on Ramsay Street) in 1968, Gabbinbar State School (government primary school on Stenner Street) in 1972 and Martin Luther Primary School (private primary school on Hume Street and a campus of Concordia Lutheran College) in 1977. Acting as a "behavioural hub" for troubled students, Toowoomba Positive Learning Centre can be found on Ramsay Street. Centenary Heights has two recreational parks. The first one is Emmerson Park, which consists of two play areas, a barbecue, and supports the preservation and conservation of mature trees. The other one is Horner's Reserve, which includes a small park and a water storage reserve.
